Becoming a business owner may not be your dream However your spouse may get the entrepreneurial bug. With so much uncertainty, a lot of people have found the time has never been better to strike out on their own. So what do you do if your spouse decides now is the time what does this mean to that spouse that is not involved or doesn’t want to get involved?

ASK TO BE PART OF THE CONVERSATIONS — EARLY AND OFTEN – Communication is key for every aspect of the business plan. If you have not been invited, then volunteer to be a part of the conversation early on. Let your spouse know that you would like to be involved even if its just listening to what is going on from the beginning. The sooner the better.

BE HONEST ABOUT THEIR IDEAS – After a healthy exchange of ideas, be honest about how your feel about their idea. You m ay have an idea that they never thought of. They may also have something that is not fully explained that you may want some clarification on. If you do not support or believe in the idea, now is the time to discuss.

CONFIRM YOU’RE IN IT FOR THE LONG-HAUL Starting a business is not a short commitment. Once you get started, you’re in it for the duration. Discuss short term and long term goals. Looking into the future and having your partner support you is very important.

PRIORITIZE COMMUNICATION, INDEFINITELY – Ensure that you make communicating with your spouse a priority in every stage of the business venture. Make sure you set aside time whether its just carving out time in the evening or going to dinner to discuss, make sure you communicate about the business going forward,

ACCEPT THAT MISTAKES HAPPEN – While you plan for everything, you can never plan for everything. You will make mistakes along the way and how you recover and support each other matters. Learning from those mistakes are almost as important as correcting the mistake.

DON’T FORGET THE RELATIONSHIP - Make sure that you make your relationship a priority above all. Never get too busy that you forget to make a life with those you love and care about.
